I started working on this months ago and planned to post it on April 9th, between Ceres and Jupiter retrograding. However, I got distracted by other projects and felt like it was unfinished, but upon further review, I realized I might as well put it out. The lesson is to not try and wait until something is “perfect” because ultimately, I was just procrastinating and denying my own good. Just start, imperfect = I’m perfect.
Jupiter and Ceres 2019 retrograde through Sagittarius
On April 8th & 10th, Ceres and Jupiter retrograde in the Sign of Sagittarius. It’s not common for both these planets to meet in the same sign, let alone have their retrogrades meet. Jupiter is only in Sagittarius once every 12 years and Ceres is only in Sagittarius once every 5 years. After 2019, Ceres does not return to Sagittarius until 2023 and does not retrograde while in the sign, while Jupiter returns to Sagittarius in 2030. They will both be in Sagittarius in 2042 but will not exactly conjunct, making this retrograde even more unique. Jupiter goes direct at the exact degree Ceres retrogrades at and the two conjunct as Jupiter leaves shadow in November, linking their retrogrades.
The largest planet in our Solar System, Jupiter’s energy resonates with abundance, luck, expansion, growth, Your current beliefs may be limiting your growth or freedom with hypocrisy and moral dilemmas. If you’re looking to attract more opportunities and blessings in the area Jupiter is transiting, it is best to express gratitude for the blessing and gifts you already possess and share this abundance with others. Additionally, in order to properly reap Jupiterian rewards, you must maintain consistency with what you’re doing physically with your ethical and moral beliefs. Lead by example.
Originally discovered in 1801, and once considered an Asteroid in our Asteroid Belt, Ceres was “promoted” to the classification of dwarf planet in 2005 when Eris’ discovery resulted in Pluto being “demoted” to a dwarf planet. That’s right, there’s a planet between Mars and Jupiter. While there are thousands of small Asteroids that add detail to Astrology, most are only needed when looking for specific details. However some of the larger asteroids (Juno, Pallas, Vesta, Hygiea, etc.) and dwarf planet Ceres definitely need more representation and understanding in our charts, especially given Ceres’ upgrade to a planet. There are no coincidences..
If you’re familiar with Ceres’ mythology, then you will find her and Pluto sharing the classification as dwarf planets rather fitting. Also known as Demeter, Ceres is an Earth Goddess, representing the harvest and bounty of her grandmother, Mother Earth (Gaia). The story goes, one day Ceres’ daughter Persephone was abducted by Pluto (Hades) and taken to the underworld. This caused Ceres to fall into a deep depression causing her to neglect her duties as caretaker of the Earth, and so the planet became cold and barren – the first winter. Eventually, the other gods were forced to intervene and Persephone was returned to Ceres, and the Earth was renewed and experienced Spring. However, Persephone would have to return to Hades for part of the year, creating our Seasonal Cycle. Interestingly, the planet Ceres contains components that suggest it was created near Pluto, adding a scientific link between the two and their mythology.
Astrologically, Ceres represents how we give and receive nurturance, feel unconditional love, find acceptance with peers, how we attach/separate, share, care for animals, integrate and work with others, and our productivity. Your Ceres placement also indicates the type of experiences which tigger self-love and self-acceptance OR self-rejection and critical attitudes. Mastering the needs of your Ceres sign, and any aspects to it, heals the need for any stressful situations you normally require in order to find balance. Early Asteroid researchers associated the Asteroids, and Ceres in particular, with the energy of Virgo, which I also agree with. Given the nurturing nature of Ceres, she also holds a strong position in Cancer – perhaps Ceres’ sign of exaltation.
Ceres Retrograde (April 8th, 2019 to July 17th, 2019)
Ceres begins retrograding at 14°16’ Sagittarius on April 8th, 2019 and turns direct on July 17th, 2019 at 0°30’ Sagittarius. This Ceres retrograde is heavily linked with Jupiter’s retrograde which begins a few days later on April 10th which is also in Sagittarius, which is one of Jupiter’s home signs. In Sagittarius, Ceres finds nurturance through freedom to explore and expand her physical and mental horizons while teaching others how to do the same. What beliefs or philosophies are shaping your life and how you care for yourself? Are you hyper-critical of yourself? Do you live in fear of not having enough or being stuck in your current stories? Ceres’ retrograde in Sagittarius will bring beliefs like this into focus so you can review and better shape your future. Ceres retrograde in Sagittarius is a great time to reframe your story. It is important to know that is it ok, and healthy, for you to help yourself before helping others. It will make you a better you and you will be of greater service to others. What to expect specifically for your sign is at the end of the article.
What to expect during the retrogrades?
It may seem daunting to think about another retrograde happening and it lasting several months. However, there is a pattern to the retrograde of outer planets which breaks the retrograde up into more digestible periods. While every other outer planet retrogrades annually, Mars and Ceres only retrograde about every 2 years. Additionally, Mars and Ceres begin retrograding shortly after a trine from our Sun, while Jupiter (and outward) begin retrograding shortly before a trine to our Sun. The reverse is true for them stationing direct. However, the rest of their retrogrades follow the same template with key markers for important moments during the retrograde.
The Signs the Sun travels over the course of the retrograde signify the areas of your life you need to further develop in order to achieve the results you desire in the Sign the planet is retrograding. Since Ceres is retrograding in Sagittarius, our Sun will transit Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, and Leo – these are the areas of life we must focus on over the course of the retrograde.
Each retrograde is broken into 2 parts, Entering Shadow to Sun Opposition and Sun Opposition to leaving Shadow.
Jupiter entered shadow January 14, 2019 while Ceres entered shadow on January 26th, 2019. This is when you began to subconsciously pick up on stories/themes you will address during the retrograde.
This trine occurred just before/during the Aries New Moon on April 4/5th. When signifying the beginning of a retrograde, there is highly peaceful flow between solar will and the energy of the planet (Ceres) and opportunities may arise along with introspection and self-generating energy allowing you to muse on the deeper meaning of your life’s requirements. For this part of Ceres’ retrograde, the Sun is in Aries, the first energy to focus on. Aries is our individuality and approach to how we assert ourselves into the world. What is true for you?
It is the moment the planet officially begins moving backwards, usually followed by an atmosphere of confusion, introspection and sudden ambivalence to the area of life (Sign) the retrograde is occuring. For this part of Ceres’ retrograde, the Sun is still in Aries. Flow with anything that feels it is reversing.
Usually signified by internal examination and re-examining what is being held back in the are of the area of life (Sign) the retrograde is occuring. This is a time we decide which stories or beliefs need to be reworked. For this part of Ceres’ retrograde, the Sun is in Taurus, the second energy to focus on. Taurus is a sense of self-worth and value. What do you value?
The opposition marks the midpoint of the retrograde and highlights which polarity requires balance. Your ego requires your energy to be balanced between introverted and extroverted actions in order to see where and what you will be manifesting from the cycle. For this part of Ceres and Jupiter’s retrograde, the Sun is in Gemini, the third energy to focus on. Gemini is highly communicative and factual based. What details or skills do you require to understand and transform existing beliefs? How can you communicate more clearly defined boundaries with others?
In the last segment of retrograde motion, revisions and adjustments are required as issues within your environment and/or body may make it appear challenging to overcome any perceived obstacles. For both retrogrades, the Sun is in Cancer, the 4th energy to focus on. Are you emotionally secure and fulfilled? How is your living situation influencing your ability to grow, expand, and nurture yourself?
You will feel something about to shift. Ceres turns direct toward the end of Cancer Season.
For this part of Ceres and Jupiter’s retrograde, the Sun is in Leo, the 5th and final area of focus. For Ceres this happens on July 23rd and for Jupiter this happens on August 6th.
This marks the end of the retrograde cycle with full external manifestations after all the inner work. Ceres leaves shadow on October 10th, 2019 while Jupiter leaves shadow on November 5th, 2019.
Key Dates For the Retrogrades:
April 4th/5th, 2019
The Aries New Moon (Sun/Moon in Aries, Gaia in Libra) formed a positive and supportive trine (120° angle) with Ceres in Sagittarius. This is very significant for not only Ceres retrograde, but also for any intentions you desire to manifest with the energy of this Aries New Moon.

August 11th, 2019
Jupiter stations direct at 14°30’ Sagittarius in a tight conjunction where Ceres began retrograding (14°16’ Sagittarius) making their cycles crossover each other. This is also the 1-year anniversary of the last Leo Solar Eclipse.
October 2nd, 2019
Ceres leaves shadow, finishing its retrograde energy. However, it begins to approach Jupiter who is still in shadow from its retrograde, which has its energy linked with Ceres’ retrograde.
October 22nd-November 5, 2019
Ceres and Jupiter begin conjuncting at 21° of Sagittarius, meeting exactly at 22°10’ Sagittarius on October 25th. Jupiter and Ceres remain together until Ceres reaches the degree Jupiter began retrograding at (Jupiter leaving shadow). Luna meets Jupiter and Ceres on the 31st as they begin to separate. Jupiter leaves shadow on November 5th. This process fully competes the joint lessons and themes of their intersecting retrograde. As the two meet in Sagittarius, Ceres and Jupiter begin a new cycle of energy. It is important to cultivate a strong sense of self-nurturing when it comes to how you expand yourself in life in this area moving forward.
