As the never-ending search for other Celestial Bodies in our sky continues to surprise us with new discoveries both in and out of our Solar System, I find the Astrological Renaissance to be no coincidence. These new bodies in our System help us gain more awareness to ourselves as they expand our awareness to more than only our lights, Sun and Moon, the eight classical planets we all know and love, and the Fixed Stars.
We are seeing more representation for Dwarf Planet Ceres and her sisters in the Asteroid Belt, Juno, Vesta, and Pallas, discovered in the early 1800s, and everyone’s favorite Centaur, Chiron, discovered in 1977. We now have thousands of other asteroids, Chiron’s other Centaur friends, Pluto’s cousins in the Kuiper Belt, like Eris, and Oort Cloud Object, Sedna, to look at. However, we all have failed to see the most important planet for us all to know, our own home world, our Mother, Planet Earth.
It's a grave miscalculation to omit Planet Earth from charts; Gaia’s energy impacts us more directly than any other planet in our Solar System. It is her, and her opposition to our Sun, that dictates the balance necessary for our very life to exist.
What is Earth?
As our Sun moves through each Sign, as a collective, our creative and self-expression is pulled into that energy. When our Sun changes signs, our Earth changes Signs as well. Our Natal chart indicate how we handle the changes of energy. Astrology is a measure of the energy created by the gravitational effects the other planets have on our world and us directly. However, many may not understand the intricate layers upon layers of charts that affect them aside from their natal chart. For the individual there’s also Solar, Lunar, Planetary, Relocations, Progressions, Regressions, and there’s even a chart for your Higher Self!
However, you are also subjected to the collective charts that make up part of the environment you live, such as your town, city, county, state, country or relationship or agreement charts. If it’s been established, there’s a chart for it. As a collective, we all fall under the same great collective chart. Currently, in the Cusp between the Age of Pisces and the Age of Aquarius, we are seeing the transition happen on the World Stage. Understanding the shift of both, is important. Becoming aware of your Earth (Gaia) Sign, better helps you balance your personal expression in this world.
Where is Earth in a Chart?
To know what your Earth Sign is, all you have to do is look at the location of your Sun Sign, then look exactly 180 degrees across your chart, to an exact opposition. Whatever sign is opposite your Sun Sign, to the exact degree and minute, is your Earth Sign. For example, if your Sun is at 11° 22’ of Virgo, then your Earth is at 11° 22’ Pisces. Oppositions in Astrology require balance. In order to utilize your Solar Expression to its full potential in this life, you must understand and balance it within your physical reality, as seen with your Earth Sign.
Why Use Earth?
While we are told Saturn rules over all that is physical–and I’m not saying that Saturn doesn’t–our actual physical reality is occurring here, on our very own home planet. Anything we wish to manifest comes into tangible-being on Earth, through the use of our resources (Taurus), we assemble and work (Virgo), to create the structures that preside over our world (Capricorn). As a ruler of Taurus, Gaia rules our physical reality, our physical bodies and senses, our resources, and what is needed to balance our solar expression into this physical world. If you think about our earthly world, fixed and stable, it is the perfect representation of Taurus' energy.
A part from the balance of the Sun-Earth polarity, Earth’s relationship to the Ascendant/Descendant, Moon Sign, and with all the planets indicate and give perspective on the individual’s physical body in both appearance, structure, and how the native reacts or views their own body as well as their physical senses and perception of this physical world. Including Earth in charts simultaneously brings awareness to body image as well as the environment we live in. Our planet is here to be a literal paradise, yet we disrespect her and turn a blind eye. The same can be said for how we treat our bodies. As above, so below. How you treat your environment often indicates how you treat your physical vessel, temple or body, but whatever you call it, it roots you here in this 3-Dimensional reality.
Earth in Transit
In transit, for the collective, understanding the sign in which Earth is during any given Season offers a practical and tangible way to navigate the Season. For example, as I write this at the end of Pisces Season, I reflect on how I made conscious effort to balance rest and spirituality (Pisces) with my day-to-day work and health routines (Virgo). This helped me navigate and feel more steady, secure, and grounded in the moment amongst the mutable energy of winter turning to spring, one year closing for another to begin. Each sign teaches something specific we all must know in order to find completion. It is safe to see new viewpoints or different perspectives in order to gain more grounding in any given situation. We are all made up of the 12 signs, and it is important to know the energy of each. Earth offers a point for a chart’s native to root themselves in the moment so they can better balance their solar expression in this world. Becoming aware to our Mother Earth is the ultimate form of self-discovery, giving you understanding of your purpose here in the now, and how to achieve what you are drawn to express in this life.
To Learn More
For anyone interested in learning more about Earth and her importance and meaning in Astrology, I highly recommend reading: "Earth Rise: A Case for Studying and Using Earth in Astrology" by Cynthia L. C. Wood (2016), “Divine Love Astrology” by Shiva Das and Mercy Ananda (2014), "Mythic Astrology Applied" by Ariel Guttman and Kenneth Johnson (2004), and "Earth: Astrology's Missing Planet" by Chrissie Blaze (2018). I found their books a breath of fresh air as I searched for information and representation for Planet Earth in Astrology. All three sources come to the same consensus with their findings on Earth placements, and I have found it to work within my own Astrology practice.
